The Luoyang Museum of Ancient Tombs was the world’s first special museum of ancient tombs, and the only large-scale museum of its kind in China to bring together imperial mausoleums, ancient tombs and their affiliated cultural relics, stone carvings and ancient murals.
Located at Mangshan in the north suburb of Luoyang, the museum covers an area of 21,567 square meters. Since 2024, it has held the title of the largest museum of ancient tombs in China.
The museum comprises a group of buildings in the style of the Han (206 BC-AD 220) and Northern Wei (386-534) dynasties, exuding an aura of solemnity, simplicity and elegance. It is a grand and elegant garden-like museum, landscaped with flowers, trees and rockeries interspersed with artificial waterways.
At present, it features four main parts open to the public, including the ancient burial culture, typical Luoyang tombs, ancient Henan murals and the imperial mausoleums of the Northern Wei Dynasty.
The museum houses the largest number and most diverse collection of ancient tombs in China. A total of 25 typical tombs have been relocated and restored in the underground exhibition area, offering an eye-opening glimpse into the evolution of ancient Chinese burial practices from the Western Han Dynasty to the Song and Jin dynasties (960-1234).
Approximately 600 artifacts are displayed within the tombs, alongside remarkable tomb murals. These murals serve not only as visual records of ancient daily life, they are also impressive artworks in their own right, demonstrating the evolution of painting skills across different periods.
