The Museum of Shanghai University (Haipai Culture Museum), a national first-class museum, opened in 2014, with a new building unveiled in 2019.
The museum comprises a Haipai culture-themed sector, exhibition halls featuring Shanghai dialect culture, the university’s history and the lifetime of scientist Qian Weichang (1912-2010), as well as Suyuan Garden, an outdoor exhibition area showcasing the legacy of old Shanghai University (1922-27). Its total floor area is 14,682 square meters, of which exhibition spaces occupy 7,615 square meters (including an outdoor exhibition area of 1,800 square meters).
The museum is dedicated to the preservation and promotion of traditional culture, Jiangnan culture, Haipai culture and red culture, contributing to the development of archaeology and museology. Housing over 10,000 items, the museum is mainly characterized by Shanghai-style cheongsams and rare wildlife specimens. Dozens of exhibitions have been curated as part of its continuous efforts in research and education.
