With red walls, green trees, and old palace maids as elements, this illustration is inspired by a Tang Dynasty (618-907) poem written by Li He (790-816). It depicts a scene of a deeply locked palace gate, as if expressing the endless suffering and loneliness of the palace maids who wonder when it will end. As messengers representing spring, the swallows flying along the walls into the distance symbolize the fleeting nature of youth.
