Capturing a tale of love and longing, this illustration is inspired by the Tang Dynasty’s poem Song of Eternal Regret written by Bai Juyi (772-846). In the upper part, a pavilion supported by colorful auspicious clouds in the immortal mountains appears to be where the imperial concubine hides. However, the swirling clouds and mist suggest that this is all a fantasy created by Emperor Xuanzong due to his longing.
