Monihei (lit. Smear You Black) is derived from the Va people's custom of smearing the forehead with pot ashes, cow blood, or mud to drive away evil spirits, and pray for blessings and peace. People participating in the revelry use paints made from pure natural ingredients to smear each other and offer mutual blessings.
