This Jurchen Jin Dynasty (1115-1234) white-glazed ceramic sculpture depicts a boy riding a water buffalo.
The buffalo is in a reclining position, with its head tilted up and mouth slightly open. Coated entirely in a white glaze, it features a mouth, eyes, horns, a tail and hooves painted in black. Seated on the buffalo’s back is a playful and endearing boy wearing a red cape, red trousers and a hat, and holding a fish in his right hand.
This portrayal vividly captures the ancient pursuit of leisurely childhood, self-contentment and harmonious joy. It is in the permanent collection of the Henan Museum.
