In the Jurchen Jin Dynasty (1115-1234), autumn was an opportune time for hunting for northern ethnic minorities. This white jade belt ornament is a fine example depicting the hunting scene, which makes good use of the original yellow of the jade to portray a plump deer under an oak tree in openwork. Lingzhi fungus and rocks are also carved around the deer. Well-balanced and intricately carved, this jade piece is a treasure in the permanent collection of the National Museum of China.
