Belgian cartoonist Pierre Culliford, who took the pseudonym of Peyo, invented the tiny human-like superstars in 1958.
The animated TV series of the cartoon was syndicated in China in 1983 and played on Guangdong Television.
Two Guangzhou musicians even created a theme song for the series, which has been widely sung by generations since.
A Smurfs exhibition is currently featured at the Guangzhou Cultural Center and will run until the end of this month.
