Shitao (1642-ca.1707) was a descendant of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) royal family and an artist skilled at using fragmented composition to showcase deep scenery through close-ups.
This painting, titled Viewing Apricot Blossoms, A Poetic Illustration, by Shitao breaks away from the traditional method of landscape painting. The distant mountains and nearby rocks form a cohesive whole, depicted with both thick and thin brushstrokes and heavy mossy dots, creating a powerful and unrestrained style.
