The hare has been adored by people for its tenderness and tameness since ancient times. A Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) crystal hare is not only unique in terms of its material but also because of its delicate design. It sits in a loaf position, tucking its short tail and resting its long ears on its back. The adorable hare appears to be searching for food.
Excavated from the underground relic-chamber of the Yuanying Pagoda in Songjiang, Shanghai, in 1994, the crystal hare is part of the permanent collection of the Shanghai Museum.
