A Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279) terracotta figurine holds a compass that has scales carved around a hole in the center. The figurine, a treasure in the permanent collection of the China Port Museum in Ningbo, Zhejiang province, provides proof that compasses were used for sea navigation at that time.
