Traditional paper-carving skills in Zibo city

Knives are usually associated with chopping food in a kitchen, but in the hands of Wang Tao, a traditional paper-carving expert, a knife becomes a paintbrush that creates lifelike images on paper.

Wang, who is from the city of Zibo in East China's Shandong province, transforms plain paper into realistic people, animals and scenery.

Paper-carving is a special technique developed from traditional Chinese paper-cutting. It uses a knife to cut through several layers of paper, and is a skill that requires a great deal of patience.

The skill – Gudu paper-carving – is a Zibo municipal intangible cultural heritage.
