The Peking Opera’s The Phoenix Returns to Its Nest was performed in Kunshan, Jiangsu province, on Aug 23. A representative work from the “Mei School” of the art, the production tells a comic love story set in the late Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Some of the arias by the heroine Cheng Xue’e feature lively rhythms.
