In ancient China, the postal system was established to facilitate delivery of correspondences and promulgation of state degrees.
A brick depicts a messenger during the Wei and Jin dynasties (220-420) riding a galloping horse and holding a wooden pass. The messenger has no mouth, indicating the confidentiality of his mission.
Unearthed from a tomb in Jiayuguan, Gansu province in 1972, the pictorial brick is housed in the Gansu Provincial Museum. It records the efficient and reliable postal services in Northwest China. A postman riding a horse became the iconic symbol of China Post in 1995.
