Born in Anshan city, Northeast China’s Liaoning province, Zhang Xian is the music director of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra and principal guest conductor of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. She won top prize at the Maazel-Vilar Conductor's Competition in 2002 and in 2005.
Zhang became the first female conductor for the Staatskapelle Dresden. She has conducted many world-acclaimed symphony companies, including London Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
