The latest version of the Peking Opera production The Imperial Consort of Tang will be staged at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center on March 11 and 12. A recent production of the Shanghai Jingju Theater Company, it depicts the tragic love story between the Xuanzong Emperor (r. 712-56) and his beloved concubine Yang Yuhuan (719-56) in the Tang Dynasty (618-907).
The Royal Consort of Tang is based on the Anecdotes of Yang Yuhuan, starring Peking Opera master Mei Lanfang (1894-1961) in the 1920s.
