Wuhan in Central China's Hubei province ranked fifth in terms of overseas influence, according to an authoritative report released at the first Forum on Global Communication of Chinese Cities. Other cities included Beijing, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Suzhou, and Xi'an.

Among the 12 social media accounts for external publicity possessed by Wuhan, two are operated by Optics Valley of China (formally known as East Lake High-tech Development Zone). To date, the valley's Facebook and Twitter accounts have more than 420,000 followers.

According to Jin Miao, researcher at the School of Journalism and Communication of Nanjing University, Wuhan's preferential geographical location, profound history and culture, and pleasant natural environment has laid a solid foundation for the city's overseas publicity work.

Since July 2020, the two accounts have made the valley's voice heard to over 30 million people, capturing the attention of renowned diplomats, embassies and enterprises.

Statistics show that 83.67 percent of the account followers are male, and over 80 percent of are aged between 18 and 34.
