The modern Tongju Opera production The Female Bricklayers debuted at the Gengsu Theater in Nantong, East China’s Jiangsu province, on Nov 29. It pays homage to the perseverant and tough female bricklayers who made great contributions to the local construction industry.
A traditional performing art in Nantong, Tongju Opera originates from Tongzi Opera, which itself derives from ancient witch culture.
