In dusty weather, pollutants can pass through the eyes, nose, throat and other mucosal tissues and skin, and directly cause varying degrees of irritation or allergic reaction. Dust particles can also enter the human body through the respiratory tract, causing various respiratory diseases.

The elderly, children, pregnant women and patients suffering from respiratory diseases and cardiovascular diseases are sensitive to sand and dust. In sandy and dusty weather, they should avoid going out as much as possible. If a chronic cough with sputum, shortness of breath, paroxysmal wheezing or chest pains occur, they should seek medical attention as soon as possible. Those who must stay outdoors for occupational reasons, such as traffic police, sanitation workers, and construction workers, should take personal protective measures.

In sandy and dusty weather, it is recommended that people stay indoors as much as possible, and take measures below:

1. Close doors and windows in good time, and seal them with adhesive tape if necessary to prevent sand and dust from entering the room.

2. Use a wet mop or wet rag to clean up dust and to prevent its re-suspension.

3. Humidifiers and sprinklers can maintain proper air humidity.

4. Turn on an air purifier if conditions permit.

If you need to go out, pay attention to personal protection.

1. Wear a mask to reduce the damage to the respiratory tract caused by wind and sand. In sandy weather, there is floating dust, inhalable particles and fine particles all at the same time, so it is advisable to wear N95 masks or masks with higher-grade filters.

2. Wear wind-proof glasses to avoid damage to the eyes. If sand and wind enters the eyes, do not rub the eyes with your hands. Rinse the eyes with running water or use eye drops as soon as possible. If you still feel uncomfortable, seek medical treatment in time.

3. Wear a hat or gauze kerchief to avoid damage to the skin, hair and ears.

4. Wash your hands and face immediately after getting back indoors. Rinse your mouth and clean your nasal cavity. If possible, take a bath and replace your clothes.

In addition, in sandy and dusty weather, dry air can lead to cracked lips as well as a dry and itchy nose and throat. Remember to drink more water and eat more fruit and vegetables rich in vitamins to keep the respiratory tract unobstructed and moist and relieve discomfort in the throat.
