With a history of more than 100 years, Sichuan University Museum is the oldest museum in Southwest China and one of the oldest in the country. In 1914, construction began on its predecessor, the West China Union University Museum, and the American scholar professor Daniel Sheets Dye was appointed as the curator.

By the 1940s, it had developed into a large museum, well-known in China, which enjoyed the reputation of "the most complete museum in Southwest China". Due to the unremitting efforts of several generations of scholars, the museum, as one of the most important comprehensive museums among colleges and universities in China, has made remarkable achievements in the collection and protection of cultural relics, displays and exhibitions, academic research, and foreign exchanges and cooperation.

Over the past hundred years, it has housed more than 85,000 cultural relic pieces, including stone carvings, painting and calligraphy, ceramics, bronze ware, ancient coins and seals, embroidery, lacquer ware, and rubbings.

In May 2005, the new Sichuan University Museum was completed. The building is located on the Jinjiang River bank, adjacent to Wangjiang Park, with a floor space of more than 13,000 square meters. The magnificent facility is integrated with the architectural style of the century-old Sichuan University. It has become another landmark in the historical city of Chengdu.
