With a history of nearly 600 years, the Zhangjiakou Ancient Fortress was built in 1429, marking the beginning of Zhangjiakou city. It covers an area of 26 hectares. There are 93 courtyards in the styles of the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911) that are well preserved in the fort, 32 of which are on the list of the foremost protected cultural heritages at national level.

Also a fortress on the Great Wall defensive line, it used to play an essential role in resisting Mongolian forces, thus making it renowned as the “martial city”of the north. The fort gradually turned into a business center with a growing border trade. In the early period of the Republic of China (1912-49), more than 40 foreign firms and banks thrived in Zhangjiakou, emerging as it became a northern “inland port".

With well-preserved residential housing, former banks and firms, Zhangjiakou Fortress is praised for being an open-air museum of Ming-Qing buildings.
