Set up under the approval of Henan provincial government in March 1995, Nanyang Hi-tech Industrial Development Zone was upgraded into a national high-tech zone by the State Council in September 2010. With an administrative area of 24.86 square kilometers, the zone has a planning area of 9.2 sq km. It governs 14 communities and four administrative villages with a population of about 160,000.
Located in the west and north part of Nanyang, the zone enjoys superior geographical position and convenient transportation. It is surrounded by railways and expressways, including transportation hubs like Nanyang Railway Station and Nanyang Jiangying Airport, which are 5 and 10 km away respectively.
Centering on the development of high and new technology industries, the zone has carried out an innovation-driven development strategy to give priority to developing the three characteristic industries of opto-electronics, modern equipment manufacturing, and new materials. Serving as a national photoelectric high-tech industrialization base, it is home to more than 50 optoelectronics enterprises, contributing to an initial photoelectric industry system.
In the first half of 2016, the zone generated 4.16 billion yuan ($612 million) in GDP, an increase of 8.7 percent. The added value of industries above a designated scale totaled 1.62 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 0.7 percent.
