Guangzhou city government, Guangzhou University and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology signed an agreement to jointly construct and operate a new university in Guangzhou, Guangdong's provincial capital, on Friday.

According to the agreement, the Guangzhou city government will provide an area covering 1.13 square kilometers for construction of HKUST (Guangzhou) in the city's Nansha district, located at the mouth of the Pearl River.

The three parties also vowed to build the new HKUST (Guangzhou) into a top university in the world and try to nurture more talents for sustainable economic growth of the Bay area.

The new university will be completed and begin to enroll students as soon as possible, said the agreement.

Meanwhile the new university will help further expand exchanges and cooperation in education, science and technology between Guangzhou and Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in the following years.

The agreement was signed by Wen Guohui, mayor of Guangzhou, Wei Minghai, president of Guangzhou University, and Wei Shyy, president of HKUST.
