Yuelu Mountain and Orange Island, Changsha

Yuelu Mountain in Changsha, capital of Central China's Hunan province, is an extension of the mysterious Mount Hengshan range. Yuelu Mountain covers a total area of 8 square kilometers with its highest peak 297 meters above the sea level. The location contains many peaks with luxurious tree cover and reclusive and precipitous mountain streams. Apart from the beautiful natural scenery, Yuelu Mountain is also dotted with lots of famous places and ancient relics dating back to the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 24), such as Aiwan Pavilion, Lushan Temple, Wangxiang Pavilion, Lushan Temple Stele of Li Yong (678-747) in the Tang Dynasty, and the Monument to Emperor Yu carved in the Song Dynasty (1127-1279), among others. Under the evergreen pines and cypresses, also lie the tomb of the Chinese revolutionary leader and politician Huang Xing (1874-1916),which is under the state protection, and the tombs of Cai E and Chen Tianhua, who were both outstanding revolutionists.

Famous for its unique red maples in autumn and pleasant scenery all year round, Yuelu Mountain is a popular destination for tourists from home and abroad.

Note:

1. Yuelu Academy, sightseeing buses and the cable-way are free for teachers, students and parents of freshmen students in Hunan University.

2. The summer here is hot and prepare accordingly. Late November and early December are the best times to enjoy the sight of red maples.

The Aiwan Pavilion, built in 1792 on Yuelu Mountain, was the subject of many famous ancient poems and also a favorite spot of Chairman Mao Zedong. The original name of the pavilion was Hongye Pavilion and the present name is derived from the poem Strolling in the Mountain written by Du Mu, a poet of the Tang Dynasty (618-907). [Photo/IC]
