The names by which Nantong is known show its advantages: the "golden coast" and the "golden waterway". It offers access to 226 kilometers of the banks of the Yangtze River.

Nantong has one of China's four biggest fishing grounds, Lvsi. Tourists visiting the golden beach in Qidong at the southern tip of Jiangsu province can experience a special kind of activity called "stamping on clams", also dubbed "sea disco", which is done barefooted. Tourists can also enjoy watching sunrises over the sea or take a boat to the spectacular converging of the waters of the Yangtze River, the Huanghai Sea and the East China Sea.
