The city of Meizhou opened its customs clearance center on July 5, boosting its already strong cross-border e-commerce industry.
The center occupies an area of 1,200 square meters and is operated by China Postal Express & Logistics Co's Meizhou branch, which invested nearly ten million yuan into the construction of the sorting system and facilities for the first phase.
Upon completion, the project will be capable of processing one package in just 6 seconds and will allow five freight vehicles to enter the center simultaneously.
It is expected that the center will be able to deal with up to 10,000 packages per day, an annual foreign trade value of 800 million yuan ($120.83 million). Locals can receive goods purchased through cross-border e-commerce platforms within 10 days.
Cheng Mucheng, deputy general manager of Guangdong subsidiary of China Postal Express & Logistics Co, said that the customs clearance center will strive to improve services for the cross-border e-commerce sector and play its part in promoting Meizhou's economic development.
"Authorities involved should create a better business environment and boost enterprises," Zeng Shangzhong, deputy mayor of Meizhou, pointed out.
According to an official at the bureau of commerce of Meizhou, the city has been experiencing explosive growth in cross-border e-commerce in recent years.
Statistics show that in 2017 Meizhou had import-and-export trade totaling 90.24 billion yuan, primarily through cross-border e-commerce platforms, an 80.6-percent increase year-on-year.
The project is a big step for Meizhou in opening up to the world and better integrating into the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
