Guangzhou Science City, developed and built by Guangzhou Development District in 1998, is currently one of the most important industrial bases in Guangzhou, with particular strength in high-tech research and development.

In order to expand its electronic information sector, the Guangzhou Science City is planning to add another 8.73 square kilometers which will be used to build an electronic information industrial base. The strong industrial environment in Guangzhou provides a strong incentive for some of the world's largest electronic information enterprises to settle in the Guangzhou Development District. France's STMicroelectronics has agreed to establish an integrated circuit research and development center; Sony (China) has invested $30 million to establish Sony Electronics Huanan Co., Ltd., which engages in the design and manufacturing of electronic products; Sanyo Electric intends to invest $20 million to build an enterprise specializing in the manufacturing of auto electronic products in Huangpu district; Nanco Electronics, the first manufacturer of eight-inch integrated circuit chips in China, has invested $586 million in total, including $186 million toward the initial phase.
