China has been consecutively elected as the chair of the Partners in Population and Development (PPD).

The decision was made by the 22nd PPD council on Nov 30 in Indonesia.

Previously, the 14th International Inter-Ministerial Conference on Population and Development reached consensus and passed the Yogyakarta Call for Action on Wednesday.

The Yogyakarta Call for Action says that the conference delegates are committed to fostering new synergies to strengthen the sustainable cities, human mobility and international migration paradigm through appropriate interventions within the framework of South-South Cooperation.

The two-day conference, held in Yogyakarta of Indonesia, was jointly organized by Partners in Population and Development (PPD), the government of Indonesia and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

Over 250 representatives, including ministers, high-level officials and scholars from 26 member countries of PPD, UNFPA and Indonesia government attended the conference.

Chinese Vice Premier Liu Yandong delivered a keynote speech at the opening ceremony on Tuesday, calling for deepening South-South cooperation on population and development.

As the chair of PPD, the Chinese government has attached great importance to South-South cooperation on population and development, said Liu.

She put forward four initiatives, namely strengthening policy dialogue and promoting the integrated decision-making mechanism, upholding the principles of opening-up and inclusiveness and promoting urban development for the benefits of more people, encouraging coordination and ensuring developing countries have a greater say in global governance on population, as well as enhancing understanding and friendship of the peoples with respect of cultural differences.
