Chuju Opera reimagines Lu Xun’s classic

The Chuju Opera The Medicine, adapted from the classic novella by Lu Xun (1881-1936), will debut at the third National Showcase of Outstanding Small-Theater Plays in Suzhou on Sept 11. Set in the late Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), the story follows two families whose lives become intertwined by a supposed cure for illness, revealing the tragedy and social realities of the time. The production blends traditional Chuju Opera singing with modern sound, minimalist staging and dynamic role-switching.
