On Sept 2, Hami in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region presented Only Dance in Yizhou, a large-scale original musical inspired by the region’s ancient history. Once known as Yizhou, Hami was an important hub on the Silk Road. Inspired by the Tang Dynasty (618-907) Yizhou Melody, a musical piece that traveled from Yizhou to Chang’an (now Xi'an) with merchant caravans, the production tells the love story of Yizhou woman Shuyao and a young man from Chang’an. Blending dance, poetry and music, it brings the cultural exchanges of the Silk Road to life while celebrating Hami’s rich history and diverse heritage.
