What did students in ancient China need for the first day of school? A well-stocked stationery box!
Housed at Tianjin Museum, this Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) black-lacquered stationery box made by Lu Kuisheng (1775-1850) contains six pieces: an inkstone, an inkstone stand, a brush holder, two seal boxes, and a water dropper. The box lid is carved with a vivid landscape scene with figures.
