Underwater shield tunnel opens in Jinan, cutting cross-river trip

Jinan's Huanggang Road Yellow River Tunnel opened to traffic on Aug 25, putting the world's largest-diameter underwater shield tunnel into operation and reducing the time needed to cross the Yellow River to about five minutes.

Stretching 5,755 meters, the tunnel is designed for a speed of up to 60 kilometers per hour. It is also China's first single-bore, double-deck shield tunnel beneath the Yellow River, with three lanes on each of two levels. Northbound traffic runs on the upper deck, while southbound traffic uses the lower deck.

The double-deck design makes more efficient use of underground space while reducing construction costs. With a clearance of 4.2 meters on each level, the tunnel can also accommodate buses, firefighting vehicles, maintenance vehicles, and emergency vehicles, boosting traffic capacity between the two sides of the river.

The 3,290-meter shield section was excavated by the Shanhe tunnel boring machine, which has a diameter of 17.5 meters. The project faced complex geological conditions beneath the Yellow River, whose riverbed in Jinan is about 5 meters higher than the ground level of the urban area on the south bank. The project team equipped the machine with advanced cutting, imaging, and intelligent systems to enable continuous monitoring, early warnings, and intelligent decision-making throughout the excavation process.

The tunnel also incorporates smart inspection robots and AI-powered fire detection, while its interior design draws inspiration from the winding Yellow River, combining safety and functionality with a distinctive visual experience.
