On the opening day of the Harbin Institute of Petroleum in Heilongjiang province on Monday, thousands of college freshmen received gift boxes with ice prints to welcome them to campus.

Ice printmaking is a distinctive art form that originated in Heilongjiang. It involves using ice as the printing plate and a knife as the brush to create prints that combine the skills of woodblock, stone, and copperplate printing. The texture of the ice creates a distinctive and expressive quality.

In addition to the ice print, the gift boxes included a refrigerator magnet featuring elements of lilacs, the city flower.
