Ordos shares desertification control experience at UNCCD COP17

Ordos, a city in North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region, showcased its experience in combating desertification and advancing ecological restoration at the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP17), held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

On Aug 21, Ordos Vice Mayor Juramt delivered a keynote speech at the Mayors' Forum, sharing the city's approaches to desertification control and ecological restoration. He highlighted Ordos' efforts to restore degraded land and improve the ecological environment, offering its experience as a local contribution to global land restoration efforts.

During the forum, Juramt exchanged views with government representatives from Nepal, Uganda, Mongolia, and other countries, as well as representatives of international organizations including the United Nations Development Programme.

Discussions addressed land degradation, soil erosion, urban heat islands, dust pollution, and sandstorms, with participants examining their impacts on urban livability, public health, and regional economic resilience, while also exploring coordinated approaches to strengthening urban and land resilience.

Ordos also presented its ecological restoration practices at the China Pavilion and other country sessions during COP17. Through exhibitions, videos, and promotional materials, the delegation showcased a range of approaches, including photovoltaic-based desertification control, road-based sand control, engineering measures, and technology-driven restoration, offering international participants a closer look at China's efforts to combat desertification.

Ordos has been actively engaged in international cooperation on desertification control. The city hosted the UNCCD COP13 and has organized 10 editions of the Kubuqi International Desert Forum.

Its desertification control practices have been applied in arid and semi-arid areas across China and shared with countries such as Saudi Arabia and Mongolia, contributing local experiences to global efforts to restore degraded land.
