Two Shanxi universities make global top 500

ShanghaiRanking has released the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2026, revealing the world's top 1,000 research universities. Among them, five universities from Shanxi province have been recognized: Shanxi University, Taiyuan University of Technology, Shanxi Medical University, North University of China, and Taiyuan University of Science and Technology.

This year, Shanxi University and Taiyuan University of Technology entered the global Top 500 for the first time. Shanxi University advanced 34 spots from the previous year, while Taiyuan University of Technology jumped 185 places. The latter particularly shone in key evaluation metrics, excelling in faculty awards and international publications.

The ARWU is the first comprehensive global university ranking, initially published in 2003, with the 2026 edition marking its 24th release. The ranking evaluates universities based on several criteria, including alumni awards, faculty awards, highly cited researchers, publications in Nature and Science, and papers indexed in SCIE and SSCI.
