The prestigious State Science and Technology Awarding Meeting was held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on July 8. Among the award-winning projects for 2025, Hubei province proudly secured 11 accolades for projects led and completed by local entities.
The awarded projects showcase a diverse range of contributors, including leading industry giants such as China Three Gorges Corporation and Yangtze Optical Fibre and Cable Joint Stock Limited Company (YOFC), as well as prominent academic institutions like Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan University, and China University of Geosciences (Wuhan).
The winning projects span various fields, including deep-sea equipment, genetic breeding, Beidou remote sensing, and memory chips, many of which are closely aligned with the key industries of Wuhan East Lake High-tech Development Zone (Optics Valley of China, or OVC).
Notably, the project "Key Technologies and Applications for Quartz Optical Fiber Core Material Preparation", spearheaded by YOFC based in the OVC, received the second prize in the National Scientific and Technological Progress Award.
Over the past decade, YOFC has overcome major technical challenges in manufacturing large-sized optical fiber preforms and high-purity synthetic quartz tubes using proprietary VAD/OVD core technologies and complete equipment sets.
The project has been fully industrialized and widely applied, boosting the international competitiveness of domestically produced quartz optical fibers and advancing the independent development of high-end specialty fibers.
