Huang Dexiu: A visionary who illuminated Wuhan's industrial future

Huang Dexiu, a pivotal figure in the development of Wuhan East Lake High-tech Development Zone (Optics Valley of China, or OVC) and a distinguished professor at Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST), dedicated over six decades to optoelectronics research and industry development.

With a visionary outlook and deep national commitment, he charted the course for Wuhan's optoelectronics industry, earning him the title "Father of Optics Valley". His pioneering efforts transformed Wuhan's eastern region from a traditional industrial area into a globally recognized hub of technological innovation.

After graduating from HUST in 1963, Huang remained at the university, immersing himself in research. In 1981, he was sent to the United States for further study, where he astutely identified the potential of the semiconductor optoelectronics sector.

Returning to China, he focused on the nascent field of optical fiber communication, overcoming significant challenges in traditional optical transmission technologies. Huang led numerous national research projects, secured over 10 national and provincial awards, and laid a solid foundation for China's independent development of optoelectronics technology.

In 1998, following an academic exchange in Taiwan, Huang foresaw the industrial trends and proposed the creation of "Optics Valley of China". He spearheaded the drafting of relevant proposals submitted to the Wuhan municipal government, leading to the establishment of the Optics Valley brand. This initiative set the core direction for the transformation and innovation of Wuhan East Lake High-Tech Development Zone.

Today, Wuhan's OVC has evolved into a national innovation hub, with the optoelectronic information industry exceeding 660 billion yuan ($97.06 billion) in 2025. It hosts numerous high-tech enterprises, nurturing industry leaders such as YOFC and Huagong Tech, and forming a globally leading optoelectronics industry cluster. This achievement fulfills the innovative aspirations and grand vision of Huang Dexiu and his pioneering peers, becoming a key driver of high-quality development in Hubei province.
