In the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) painting Highlights at the Confluence of the Yangtze and Han Rivers collected by Wuhan Museum, Wuhan's famous Turtle Mountain (Gui Shan) and Snake Mountain (She Shan) appear together as Black Tortoise (Xuanwu, one of the Four Symbols of the Chinese constellations), ruling water, wind, and rain.
Living in the place where great rivers meet, people in Wuhan, Hubei province once believed these two mountains could protect the city from floods and bring peace and harmony.
