Taishan Mountain: Where ancient trees anchor a green civilization

Taishan Mountain, an icon of Chinese civilization and a cultural symbol of national peace and prosperity, rises grandly in eastern China.

It is currently home to 17,599 ancient trees over a century old, with 1,892 surpassing 300 years. Among these are six cypresses in Daimiao Temple listed as nationally protected ancient trees. Planted over 2,100 years ago during the Han Dynasty (206 BC–AD 220), they continue to sprout new branches — living witnesses to millennia of history.

With forest coverage at 94.8 percent and vegetation cover at 95.6 percent, Taishan Mountain offers a thriving habitat for over 3,000 insect species and 378 wild bird species. These ancient trees are not just natural wonders; they represent "green heritage" that carries the enduring spirit of Chinese culture.

Taishan Mountain's ecological richness is no accident. The region has long prioritized the protection and revitalization of its ancient trees, making them cultural symbols of ecological preservation and development.

In 2025, six of its ancient cypresses were included in the first national protection list of ancient trees at cultural heritage sites — a remarkable testament to China's commitment to harmonious coexistence between nature and humanity.

Today, Tai'an city holds multiple national honors, including National Forest City, National Historical and Cultural City, and National Civilized City. With greener mountains, cleaner waters, and a richer cultural climate, Taishan Mountain stands as a beacon of green civilization for the modern era.
