Ancient blue-and-white vase sends wishes for examination success

China's National College Entrance Examination, the gaokao, is underway. To all students taking the exam, we send the best wishes through this Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) blue-and-white with underglaze red vase featuring Kui Xing, the deity of scholarly success. Standing atop a giant sea turtle on a single foot and holding a writing brush in his right hand, Kui Xing symbolizes the traditional hope of excelling in exams and "standing out from the rest".
