Global PhDs drawn to Guangzhou's Nansha as high tech hub

More than 230 doctoral candidates and graduates from over 200 top universities worldwide have been attracted to Guangzhou's Nansha district through a government‑led "talent scouting" initiative since November 2025.

The sixth edition of the "Doctoral Future" program, held on May 29‑30, brought together over 50 PhDs from Cambridge, Stanford, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and other renowned institutions. Unlike conventional tours, the two‑day event focused on in-depth exploration of advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence, biomedicine and marine technology, with site visits to firms such as Guangdong Xinyue Semiconductor and Guangzhou Shipyard International.

Several attendees have already translated their explorations into concrete actions. A PhD graduate from South Korea's Yonsei University relocated her tech company to Nansha in February 2026, while a postdoctoral researcher from Shenzhen University secured job offers during the tour.

Nansha's appeal is reinforced by generous incentives: eligible doctoral talents can receive up to 750,000 yuan ($110,650.48) in subsidies, with additional provincial and municipal support pushing the total to around 2 million yuan. Free accommodation, housing allowances and entrepreneurship funds are also available.
