Qingdao FTZ achieves new breakthrough in biological breeding

The Qingdao Area of the China (Shandong) Pilot Free Trade Zone (Qingdao FTZ) has made a breakthrough in biological breeding. KingAgroot, a crop science company based in the zone, received two new agricultural genetically modified organism (GMO) biosafety certificates from China's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.

These approvals cover two proprietary innovations: an insect-resistant and herbicide-tolerant soybean (KA-PM2208-8) and a disease-resistant corn (KA-2D2001-3). This dual certification represents a substantial improvement for Qingdao's biotechnology sector, highlighting increased autonomy in core breeding technologies and supporting China's broader goals of food security and agricultural self-reliance.

With these latest approvals, KingAgroot now holds five agricultural GMO biosafety certificates, further strengthening its position in crop biotechnology and seed innovation.

In recent years, Qingdao FTZ has actively promoted the development of the life and health industry by accelerating the concentration of innovative enterprises, research platforms, and high-level talent.

To date, the zone has attracted 71 life and health industry projects with total investment exceeding 12 billion yuan ($1.65 billion). It has also supported leading enterprises within Qingdao's key industry value chains, including BGI, Guoxin Pharmaceutical, and KingAgroot.
