Donglan county in Hechi has rolled out an innovative tourism initiative that transforms local reservoir migrants into direct beneficiaries of the region's cultural and ecological tourism boom.
Capitalizing on its abundant water resources and picturesque landscapes along the Hongshui River, Donglan has developed a string of leisure attractions, including scenic parks and fishing resorts. The program ties environmental conservation to rural prosperity, creating steady, long-term income streams for relocated households.
Under the new model, local families participate in tourism operations and share in the project's profits. They earn money through dividends, land leasing fees, on-site employment and small business opportunities, moving beyond reliance on one-off resettlement subsidies.
The initiative spans three townships and seven reservoir villages, benefiting over 16,000 migrants. The newly built attractions now welcome 100,000 visitors annually, creating more than 100 local jobs and generating over 10 million yuan ($1.38 million) in annual tourism-related revenue.
This approach converts the area's ecological strengths into tangible economic gains, lifting living standards and setting a sustainable example for reservoir resettlement and rural development.
