What looks like a long clay vessel is actually a Neolithic drum. This earthen drum has a cylindrical upper part, gradually lengthened using the coil-building method. The lower part features a jar-shaped belly with carved holes in the lower abdomen — an early design for creating sound. One of four such drums found in the third phase cultural remains of the Dugou site in Qingxu county, near Taiyuan city in Shanxi, this piece echoes the style of the early Taosi culture (2300-1900 BC), now housed in the Taiyuan Museum.
