Many of these artists started their careers creating picture books, which were comic-strip-style publications that enjoyed great popularity in China till the 1990s. These artists developed a distinctive style that featured the elegance of Chinese ink art as well as vivid depictions of ordinary people's life scenes, and had over the past decades become known for their large-scale paintings.
