Beijing, the Chinese capital with a long history, offers a culturally diversified environment to students attending the Canadian International School of Beijing (CISB), which has pupils from more than 55 countries.
"There are cultural things, such as dance, story-telling and Peking Opera, anything you can think of. History comes to life in Beijing," said Douglas K. Prescott, the Head of School/AKD Academic Superintendent of CISB, who has been working and living in Beijing for 11 years.
Likening the school to a mini-United Nations, Prescott said that the school has tried to bridge the cultural divide between different countries and cultivate a positive and caring attitude among students. Students from different cultural backgrounds embracing and high fiving each other when they meet have become a typical tradition of the school.
"We can have differences of opinion and still be right," said Prescott, who upholds the same philosophy of Norman Bethune, a Canadian doctor known for his efforts to save the lives of Chinese soldiers during World War II, which is to be kind, caring and always ready to help others.
