A lacquer screen, dating to the Northern Wei Dynasty (386-534), has illustrations of exemplary women in ancient China. The screen can be split into two pieces and joined by mortise and tenon.
The screen is red-lacquered on both sides, and each side has four groups of exquisite paintings and inscriptions that highlight stories of moral women and emperors, generals, dutiful sons and cultured men.
The two pieces of the screen are in the permanent collection of the Shanxi Museum. They were unearthed from the tomb of Sima Jinlong (司马金龙) in Shijiazhai village in Datong, Shanxi province in 1965.
