The modern Chaoju Opera A Great Leader of Overseas Chinese was staged in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong province, on May 22. The production depicts the life story of Yi Guangyan (1879-1939), a leader of overseas Chinese in Thailand who offers great help to his homeland during the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931-45).
The Chaoju Opera prominent in the Guangdong and Fujian areas was listed as the national intangible cultural heritage in 2006.
