Based on the play by Kong Shangren (1648-1718), the Cantonese Opera production of The Peach Blossom Fan was staged in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong province, on May 9. It dramatizes the tragic love between Li Xiangjun and Hou Fangyu during the transition from the Ming to the Qing Dynasty.
Originating in the Ming Dynasty, the Cantonese Opera prevails in Guangdong and Guangxi and highlights local dialect and music features.
